Canada and Latin America can build a relationship that is based on principles of democracy, self-determination and the defense of human rights
Migrant Workers
are Essential
Temporary foreign workers are essential to Canada’s food supply. Many workers have been coming to Canada for decades, but have less rights, and poorer working conditions than other people. COVID-19 has created a greater focus on our food supply and how essential it is for all of us in Canada.
We must do a better job at protecting the workers that help bring food to all of our tables. Farmworkers specifically have been raising red flags about inadequate housing, dangerous working conditions and poor pay for many years. Workers are often forced to share poor living facilities with dozens of other workers. COVID outbreaks have been common across Canada in food chain work places. As has been pointed out by advocates including Justice for Migrant Workers and the Agricultural Workers Alliance, farmworkers need immediate protections.
We need the Provincial government to:
1) Take action to increase wages for temporary foreign workers, same as other essential workers;

2) Ensure farm workers are provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and are able to adhere to social distancing at work and at their residences;

3) Extend basic rights including access to employment insurance and decent housing conditions.

Covid 19 in Ecuador
We need to push the Canadian government to do more to support the people of Ecuador, particularly in Guayaquil by bringing back all stranded Canadians in Ecuador and providing medical supplies to health care workers at the front lines of the pandemic.
